Czech discgolf championship 2020

Czech discgolf championship 2020

This year we had to wait for Czech discgolf championship for a bit. Originally it was supposed to be a little earlier than normal, in May, but coronavirus decided otherwise and the tournament was moved to the beginning of July. However mother nature didn’t like that date and flooded the course in Uničov and half of the course ended under water. The third date for CDGC was 21.-23. August and even though it is almost unbelievable, it finally happened. Players that were able to participate enjoyed perfectly prepared course and true summer weather.

It was played by golf start and players had to fight slightly modified Uničov layout every day for three days. Those who started in the morning had to overcome morning dew and wet discs, but those who played in the afternoon had to fight with sweaty hands and strong wind. Both choices are not good. In addition there was a big storm on Saturday which caused a break and two last holes of the first MPO flight had to be postponed to Sunday morning because of that. Thankfully the rain didn’t last as long as it did in July and the course was playable. Only some new water puddles were here and there.

The course in Uničov is typical mainly for its holes that average around 90m. But there are also some “beauties” in form of 4 par holes. Iam talking mainly about the so called ‘’thermometer’’, hole number 7. This hole made a lot of troubles to some players and raised their scores substantially. The highest score on this hole was 37. This hole was more difficult than last year, because the space between first fairway and island green, which was roughly 10m diameter circle, was much larger and some players threw a lot of discs before they finally ended up on the island. The results for this hole were very high so the organization team decided to shorten the distance between fairway and island to make it more reachable.

Another difficult hole was hole number 13 a 4 par that went over the famous pond in the park of Uničov. Players had to cross the water and numerous discs ended up in it. Thankfully there was a “rescue team” that willingly went under water for each disc. They saved a lot of them and even found some discs from previous years.

And how did it look in the players field? MPO category overflowed with competition and players competed for every birdie on the course. Kryštof Novák and Jakub Semerád shared the lead with their score of -12. Jakub Knápek was at the 3rd place with -10. Jakub Semerád worked hard in the second round and took the lead. But Kryštof Novák decide that he will not give up the fight for the title and thus it was time to start the chase. On hole number 14, during final round he almost threw in an ace, when he hit the lower part of basket. But it was just the beginning, with which he pumped up the audience that watched and cheered during the final round. On hole number 16, where a low and straight shot was needed to reach the basket he threw a bit higher than he would like. Some spectators even made a comment that it was way too high, but the result… disc ended up in the basket and Kryštof threw an ACE which was accompanied with loud cheers and words of admiration from everyone watching. Kryštof then maintained his lead and won his second title of the Czech discgolf champion. Jakub Semerád kept the second place and third place was secured by Jakub Knápek.

This year is marked by very equal results for the Czech FPO division. This showed right after the first round, where 4 players Veronika Fabíková, Lenka Vondrová, Eliška Bártková and Andrea Jenčke shared the lead. And the fight continued. After second round Eliška Bártková remained in the lead and secured 4 stroke lead infront of Jarmila Havířová, which played hot second round and jumped up to second place. Right behind her it was very even, Andrea Jenčke and Lenka Vondrová were behind her by only two strokes. The last round was again very even and full of ups and downs. Jarmila also made some strokes on Eliška who was leading by only one stroke before the last hole. But hole 18 could be very treacherous. Both plaers played 6, a double bogey, which meant that Eliška took her second title of Czech discgolf champion.

Juniors category was lead by Martin Štípek. But Petr Mrázek and Jakub Dostál, didn’t like that and started to chase Martin right at the beginning of second day, which resulted in Jakub Dostál as the leader of this category after second round. He stayed in this position until the end and even scored and ACE on the same hole where Kryštof hit the bottom part of basket (hole nr. 14). This ensured Jakub’s firm lead and resulted in his second title with three stroke lead. Petr Mrázek finished second, one stroke in front of Martin Štípek.

In Masters category it was a fight between 3 guys – Tomáš Dostál, Lukáš Filandr and Rudolf Konečný. Tomáš took the lead after first round, which was very hard to maintain, because Lukáš and Ruda were fighting back. But Lukáš finished strong and took the title with just one stroke lead. Rudolf ended up second and Tomáš took the bronze medal.

In MP50 category it was mainly a fight between Jirka Provazník and Pavel Votický. Even though Jirka was loosing 6 strokes on Pavel he didn’t give up and fought back. The performance of these two players was so even that even after 3 round there was no winner, which drove them into a thow-off which resulted by Jirka wining the title right on the first hole. It was something like a small discgolf miracle which Jirka attributes to Petr Houmr Konečný, who was helping him from above. Third place was taken by Pavel Marišinec.

Thank you very much to the organization team for a tournament that will not be easily forgotten. DG club Eagles Uničov set the bar for CDGC even higher than before and it will be truly a challenge to host a championship that is going to be as good as this one.
