Czech Championship 2022
The Czech Championship is over and the new champions are successfully crowned. This year the championship was held in the paradise of Czech discgolf – on a hill in Valašská Bystřica called Búřov, from 9th to 11th September 2022. Two layouts were prepared for the tournament, one more challenging for MPO and MJ18 and the other for the FPO category. We will talk about what it was like and how the title battle went together. So let’s do it.
The course
As mentioned before, there were two different layouts for the tournament, one for men and one for women. The one for men was much more challenging and longer. It was tested this July at the adult disc golf camp and we already found it to be a challenge back then. The holes sometimes didn’t seem that difficult at first, but a person often missed their line just a bit and got into big trouble from which it was hard to save par.
One of the hardest holes was hole 14 (333m, 263m for FPO). When you first came to it, you couldn’t even really understand what the fairway was and what an OB was. A long grassy area downhill dotted with OB sticks. Once you understood how the fairway of this hole worked and where you want to get to, you could start celebrating. But the real celebration came after you managed to play this hole with as few OBs as possible. This was often a really difficult task
There were also 2 holes where players were threatened by water. One of them was hole 15 (99 meters downhill). A muddy pond haunted the left side of the green and the basket was sitting right next to it. There was a large area on the right side where you could play for par, but it wasn’t always easy to get to the basket from there. It was really common that players put too much power behind their upshot and they ended up OB in water.
The second water hole was hole n.18, 70 metres long (FPO – 56 metres). It was thrown from an elevated area and the player had to hit a small island in front of which a small pond was located. There were much more challenging holes on the course than this one, but it was more about the fact that you kind of knew you could most likely take 2 or 4 from here. Plus, on this hole, the winners were crowned, which made it even more stressable.
The course also featured some classic holes from previous years, such as the Bůřovský houmrovník on hole 1. A great quadruple-mando that can make inaccurate players’ scores pretty bad. Plus, it has the superpower to make you very nervous right from the start
FPO
A total of 16 women entered the FPO category this year. Three of them – this year’s medalists from the World Team Championships – myself, Martina Vajdová and Nikola Moravcová – fought for first place. Niky took the lead right from the start and decided not to let go. She lost it only for a moment during the third round, but then she fought back with experience. It wasn’t quite that easy though, as Martya made some beautiful shots and also recorded countless birdies. I was lagging a bit behind in this match and some of my shots were not going as well as I would have liked.
In the end, Nikol held on until the end and won her first Czech Championship title! Martina took the silver medal and I took the bronze.
Nikola deserved her title rightfully, she showed really skilled discgolf over the weekend. Congratulations!
Kristýna Jurčíková took 7th place.
MJ18
There was also a big battle for the title in the MJ18 category. Martin Opršal was the most successful during the first 2 rounds. Kristián Kvita and Filip Surjomartono were also close behind him. Unfortunately, Martin did not keep his lead until the end and lost his lead during the last round. Filip and Kristian took advantage of this. Filip played a beautiful round -6 with a rating of 1021, which secured him the gold medal and the title of National Champion. Kristián took the silver medal and Martin was left with the bronze. Still, it is a very good result and we are proud of Martin! The boys left behind a lot of favourites for this tournament.
MPO
After a few weeks of touring around America, Bohdan Bílek and Jakub Semerád returned to the Czech Republic, and we were very curious to hear what they would tell us about their travels and, most importantly, how they would play. Will they even give us a chance or will they compete for the first place between them?
Matej Vojtík took the lead with an amazing round of -11 (rating 1050). Second was Daniel Konecny who played -9 (rating 1033). Eight shots under par (rating 1025) was played by Bohdan Bílek.
In the next round, Bohdan took the lead. He was not deterred by the storm that came during the third round, because of which the game was interrupted. Fortunately, it passed quickly again and the players were able to return to the field and finish their rounds.
Bohdan didn’t let anyone else take the lead and played an amazing round of -12 (rating 1070)! For this he won the gold medal and his first title of National Champion. Bohdan, we are very proud of you and congratulations!
After three rounds Matěj Vojtík and Jakub Semerád had the same score and both were sitting tied for the second place. A playoff ensued, with both boys playing almost similar rounds and it seemed like the playoff would be endless. In the end Matej made a mistake on the 18th hole (4th hole of the playoff), Kuba threw under the basket and took second place. Matěj took the bronze.
Other team proDiscgolf members:
Jakub Knápek and Petr Striegler took 4th place. Petr Mrázek took 9th place and right behind him on the 10th place was Kryštof Novák. Daniel Konečný finished 13th and Robin Kaňok took 43rd place.
Tournament summary
I would like to start by thanking the organizers for putting together such a great tournament. I certainly can’t think of anything to criticize about the tournament preparation. The course was perfectly prepared thanks to Silvester Mikuláštík, the food was wonderful thanks to his handy wife Míša, the weather was perhaps the best it could be (except for the one storm) and the views were perfect as always.
