O pohár starosty města Uničov 2022
The third tournament of the KOSTKA state Czech Discgolf Tour is over and we are slowly approaching the finals. There is only one tournament remaining till we find out who will win the highest Czech league. Now, lets take a look on how was the penultimate tournament O pohár starostyměsta Uničov.
I have to say for myself that it was thrilling from the beginning till the end. Results of the best players were so equable that no one knew, who was going to win. It had to be really attractive for the fans.
The Change
At this tournament, we also had to deal with a new layout. A few of the old holes from last year remained, but there were a lot of changes. Right off the bat, we had to throw over the water twice. Unfortunately, I think a lot of players sank at least one disc in it because even though sometimes it seemed like the throw was great and safe, some twigs would knock it into the water. Luckily, the disks were caught on the shore by the devoted Martin Štípek, who sometimes jumped the dart on the shore for them.
The course has also added a lot of new par 4s. I didn’t find the holes in general that difficult, with a few exceptions. However, it could easily happen that you missed your line completely and could get into very difficult positions where maybe no one has ever been before. Pars and some birdies were definitely possible here though.
The Weather
As for the weather, we experienced all kinds of it during the tournament. We were all sweating on Thursday during practice and on Friday during the first round because it was crazy hot. On Saturday, some players were bothered by the rain. It rained mostly in the morning, then it calmed down and by the afternoon it didn’t rain at all for the MPO cards. On Sunday, the wind became stronger, which bothered the players, especially on holes 9 and 10, on which accuracy was necessary because otherwise there is a risk of OB, which of course nobody wants.
MPO
In the MPO, Jakub Knápek smoked the competition and won by 5 strokes. He said that this victory meant a lot to him because he had not won a first league tournament for two seasons. Congratulations, Kuba, we are very proud of you!
Our Kryštof Novák was not idle at this tournament either. He held on to the lead card and made it to second place, which he won after a playoff with Matej Vojtík, who despite a very interesting round and even an ace (!) on the 16th hole, eventually messed up the last hole and lost the toss, so he took the bronze in the end.
Petr Striegler certainly had a great potential to win. But due to a bad second round, he lost it, although he didn’t give up. He played an amazing third round and thanks to that he took at least a nice 4th place.
Even Petr Mrázek did relatively well at the tournament despite not being 100% healthy. On the last day he fought his way to the lead card, where he didn’t play that well, but still ended up in 9th place.
Robin Kaňok finished tied for 18th place. He wasn’t always happy with his play, but at least he played a very nice first round.
FPO
In the women’s division, it was a fight from start to finish. During the first and second rounds, I managed to keep first place, but during the third round, there were some changes. Kristýna Jurčíková, the new talented player, started to step on my toes and for part of the round, she took the lead. But then she faltered on one hole and lost her lead. Similarly, the attacking Nikola Moravcova also faltered and the battle for the first place remained between me and Slovakian Katka Boďová. I held the lead for quite a long time, but towards the end, I made a few mistakes and everything was decided on the last hole. Katka Boďová took the gold, I took the silver and after a playoff between Nikola and Kristýna for third place, Kristýna Jurčíková took the bronze. It was an incredible success for Kiki and I believe it will not be the last time we hear about her. It’s just the beginning.
MJ18
In the Junior category, it was also very exciting. The lead changed several times during the tournament, and Tomas Mozola also took the lead for a while.
In the end, the boys played a little better, but Tom still took home the bronze medal. Martin Opršal and Honza Janku fought for the first place. It was a fight to the last throw, the boys even had to go to the playoff. In the end, Martin Opršal won the gold, for which we congratulate him very much! Honza Janků took silver.
MP40
In the Master category, it was also very exciting. The first place went to Milosz Boruszewski from Poland. Second place belonged to Libor Juřena after winning the playoff and third place went to Martin Malý.
Moje hra a návštěvy lékárny
My game this year hasn’t been quite where I would have liked it to be, but since our Finnish trip to the European Open, it has finally started to improve. Although I’m normally pretty good at approaching, it was one of the weakest parts of my game at this tournament. Otherwise, though, I liked my game and I even started running up on my approaches on par 4s, something that had been missing from my game up until then. I have to say I quite enjoyed it, which I’m very glad about.
In general, I was excited to finally be able to play in a way that kept me in the lead. This hasn’t been so successful this year and it honestly annoyed me because I felt deep down that I definitely had what it takes.
During the tournament, I had two somewhat silly injuries that may have partially distracted me from the game.
The first one happened on Friday about 10 minutes before the first round when I was about to walk to the first hole and suddenly stepped on a stick sticking perpendicularly out of the ground and pierced my shoe so badly that it stung my foot and started bleeding. That didn’t bring me much joy, but after that, I played a very decent round and my foot didn’t hurt. Unfortunately, after the round, the pain returned and I limped all afternoon. At least we popped to the pharmacy to get some stuff to help me treat it. The next few days the pain gradually went away and it got better. On Saturday I poured hot water on my leg so we had to visit the pharmacy again. I felt like I was picking up all the possible injuries for this year during this tournament. On Sunday, everyone was worried about what I would come up with again, but luckily I was fine and my bad luck had finally faded.
Thanks
Huge thanks to the organizers of the tournament, which are the discgolf club Eagles Uničov. Thank you very much for a wonderful tournament, can’t wait for next year!
I would also like to thank my caddie Michal Sviták, without whom I would not have played the tournament so easily. I really appreciate it.
